These days, it is not uncommon for parents to hold lavish parties on behalf of their children. In my opinion, if it is done in moderation, it is not a problem as long as both parents and children are aware of their spending limits.

Due to the influence of social media, children these days are looking to celebrate every occasion. These parties give them an opportunity to have a blast with their friends. They can also post their photos and videos on their social media handles for the whole world to see and enjoy. Many parents are willing to go out of their way to please their children. We are now living in a world where families are usually nuclear. In many homes, there are just one or two children and for many parents the only purpose of their existence is pleasing the kids. Hence, they push all limits and spend inordinate amounts of money on their children’s parties. For some parents, these parties also help them overcome the guilt of not being able to spend enough time with their children.

Of course, there is no harm in organizing a party every now and then. But such parties should never be about glitz and glamour. It is important for parents to ensure that these parties are intimate affairs where their children can spend some quality time with their friends. If it becomes competitive and each child wants to outdo their peers and host the biggest and most expensive party, it becomes a waste of money. Many parents will not be able to afford such parties and children whose parents are not rich enough may start feeling inadequate and inferior. Such negative emotions will only create resentment in them and affect their relationship with their parents.

In order to find a solution to this problem, parents need to inculcate good values in their children. They need to teach children the value of money and foster in them a sense of gratitude for what they have. Values are essential for children to grow up into responsible adults.  If they believe that life is all about partying, they will never find any meaning in it. To conclude, parents are hosting expensive parties for their children to impress them. This practice is particularly common among parents in nuclear families. Excessive spending, however, is bad because children fail to understand the value of money.
