There is no denying the fact that social media has revolutionized the way we interact with the world. Almost everyone is on a networking platform like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. People use these platforms not only to connect with friends and family but also to express their opinion on various topics. In my opinion, this trend has both positive and negative aspects.

There are several benefits to posting our complaints online. Social media has certainly brought transparency to many aspects of our life. For example, now if people face a problem with the authorities or other public and private entities they interact with, they can log on to a social media platform and post their complaint there. Anything that is publicly shared on social media can reach millions in a few hours and a quick resolution is usually achieved. Before the advent of social media, if we had to go to a government office to get something done, the officials there would sometimes ask for bribes. Sometimes we may have to make multiple visits to get a small thing done. Now the situation has changed a lot. Thanks to social media, the general public can now expose corrupt and inefficient officials. This fear of getting exposed on social media has actually made many government officials honest and efficient. Social media also helps people to galvanize support for various causes. People can create various communities online with the objective of gathering support for causes they are passionate about. So, obviously, there are benefits to posting complaints online as it spurs authorities into action.

On the other hand, social media has also given narcissists and anti-social elements a platform to express their useless, egoistic or even harmful opinions. Sometimes, people use social media for the sole objective of spreading falsehood or tarnishing another person’s image. No one bothers to check the veracity of social media posts, and people take everything posted online at face value. This can cause irreparable damage. Thoughtless social media posts can even trigger communal riots and social unrest.

In short, social media has given everyone a voice and I personally believe that it is a good thing. Writing about our problems and concerns online is a faster and more effective way of drawing the attention of authorities. Unfortunately, social media is a double edged sword and liable to be misused.
