Computers are now being used in all walks of life. Consequently, people now rarely write with a pen or pencil. Nor do they perform mathematical calculations in their mind. Hence, some people argue that schools should no longer emphasize on good handwriting or mental ability. I do not agree with this view.

It is true that we rarely write with our hands these days. This, however, does not mean that good handwriting is a useless skill. There are still many situations where being able to write legibly is an asset. Many examinations are still pen and paper only. If the student cannot write a good hand, their score will be affected. Learning to write neatly also benefits the motor development in children. Good handwriting also helps us to leave a positive impression on others. It is a sign that we pay attention to detail.

Similarly, mental mathematical skills are important too. Of course, these days, people rarely do sums on a paper or in their mind. They use a calculator or a computer. Sometimes, however, we may not have the calculator, phone or computer at our disposal. In this case, if we are able to do a quick sum in our mind, it will save us a lot of trouble. Also, mental maths boosts our brain activity and makes us smarter. By contrast, if we are fully dependent on the computer for doing even a simple arithmetic calculation, it will seriously impact our IQ.

In conclusion, while it is true that rampant use of computers has reduced the need to write with our hand or do calculations in the mind, they are still valuable skills that benefit our brain power and motor skills. Also, computers cannot be carried everywhere and in such situations both of these skills are essential.
