E-learning is gaining popularity. It is thought by many that e-books will eventually replace paperback books while others do not agree with this view. This essay will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of this development in detail.

E-books are portable and lightweight and hence they are easy to carry around. Instead of carrying multiple bulky books, one e-book reader can carry thousands of e-books. Thus, they save lot of space in your home and office. Moreover, these are easily accessible anywhere. One can download and store them for later use. Students and employees can access learning material while travelling or even when they are at home. Better still, trees are not cut down to produce ebooks. Needless to say, their popularity is soaring. According to a survey conducted by Amazon, there is a 40% increase in the sale of ebooks over the last few years.

However, there are some drawbacks associated with this development. Firstly, it requires a special device or computer to store and read e-books. Unlike traditional books, electronic books require an e-reader and a special charger to keep that device running. Poor people may not be able to afford them. Secondly, staring at a screen for long hours can cause eye strain. However, technology is developing and now many ebook readers have an electronic paper display that does not hurt the eyes.

To conclude, the rising popularity of ebooks is certainly a positive trend because ebooks are environment friendly and convenient. They do have some downsides but they are likely to be addressed as technology develops.

It is true that more and more people choose to use electronic books rather than books nowadays and people have completely different views about this development. This essay will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of it.

On the one hand, using ebooks can benefit people in different ways. Firstly, instead of using paper to print books, electronic devices are more environmentally friendly. The less production of paper means less tree or forest will be cut and fewer habitats of wildlife animals will be damaged. Secondly, ebooks are much easier to carry than books, as hundreds of books are just saved in one small portable device. I cannot imagine how a person could carry even only 10 books with him. Finally, most of the ebooks can be downloaded from the Internet, which means a variety of resources in any language from any countries can be all available. This may not be able to be done by a book shop.

On the other hand, relying too much on ebooks can cause certain problems. It can make intellectual property management difficult because of the mass information online. For example, there are many websites that provide free book download illegally. Also, for those who live in poverty, this development will mean unaffordable devices. With insufficient book resources, their learning opportunities will be reduced. For other people who are not good at using technology, they would have less chance to read or gain knowledge as well.

In conclusion, ebooks are a good option as it is positive for environment, easy to carry and can be linked to various resources. However, intellectual property can become a problem and it can bring difficulties for poor people or people who are not familiar with using technology.
