Some individuals opine that the increase in the popularity of eBooks is a positive development whereas others think that it is detrimental. This jump in the popularity of e-books will certainly save many trees and reduce the space required for storage; however, reading eBooks for prolonged hours is detrimental for eyesight.

The two primary benefits of eBooks are eco-friendliness and space savings. eBooks do not require paper; nor do they occupy physical space; actually, thousands of eBooks can be stored on a single device. Another advantage is that they can be carried around easily. Actually, if schools start using laptops or tablets instead of printed books, the weight of school bags will reduce to a great extent and benefit children. Electronic books are cost effective too. As their production does not require paper, they are much cheaper than paper books.

On the other hand, there are some issues associated with using eBooks as the light emitted by the device screen can affect the eye. Actually, prolonged reading will cause eye strain.  Lack of tech savviness is another issue that prevents some people from adopting eBooks. For example, many seniors are reluctant to read eBooks because they do not know how to operate an eBook reader or mobile phone. If paper books disappear one day, they will be in trouble.

In conclusion, the growing popularity of eBooks is certainly a positive development as it is beneficial for the environment and eliminates the need to carry heavy books around; however, excessive reading of eBooks can affect readers’ eye sight.
