Nowadays we can see that marriage ceremonies are becoming grader and more expensive. I think the main reason for this is social pressure and it is a negative development, as many people cannot afford such weddings.

To begin with, everyone wants their wedding to be bigger / grander than that of their friends or acquaintances because of social pressure. It is a vicious cycle as people attend bigger weddings, they also want to have the same or even better for themselves. For example, there is a trend of pre-wedding photo shoot currently and many couples spend a hefty amount just to have pictures clicked before marriage. Many of them might be doing it under the influence of family and friends who claim / insist that since it is a onetime event, they should not worry about the money spent. Similarly, there are many small things which can be avoided but are done under social pressure.

However, many people do not have a lot of money and may have to spend all of their savings / their lifetime savings for the event. People tend to spend more than their budget in order to show off during the wedding day. This unnecessarily causes financial trouble for their family going forward. For example, one of my uncles spent 20 years of his savings on his daughter’s wedding in order to make sure everything was done in the best way and that the guests were happy. He regretted it as he went bankrupt during the financial crisis just after the marriage.

In conclusion, I would say there is an increasing trend of organizing an expensive / lavish wedding because of social pressure and it is very negative for society as people who do not have enough money might risk their financial security while spending big on the grand day.
