There is a noticeable difference in the number of male and female students at universities. Some people believe it is necessary that there should be an equal number of male and female students in every course / class, while there are many who are against this idea due to a number of reasons. I disagree with the proposition that universities should accept equal number of boys and girls because merit and aptitude should be given more importance than gender.

The whole idea of equal number of men and women in every field is illogical. To start with, all universities should accept people based on merit and not gender. While the idea of having equal number of men and women may seem to empower women, there can be a situation where women are admitted to universities in spite of lacking what it takes to finish the course. If the seats are reserved based on gender, many meritorious students might not get admission. Thus, we can see how absurd the idea is of admitting equal number of men and women.

Just like merit, aptitude is another thing that should be considered while admitting students into a course. Studies have shown that some fields are popular among women than men. For example, courses like nursing, home science have more female applicants. If the seats are reserved equally for both genders, universities might not be able to fill all the seats due to fewer applicants of one gender. This could be disastrous for education system overall.

In conclusion, gender based reservation of seats at university is a bad idea because equality cannot be promoted at the expense of merit. Since universities are the places for learning, the most meritorious students should be the ones getting admission.

Recently, gender equality in university admissions has incited considerable interest. I totally agree with the statement that universities should give the same chance to the males and females in any field. In the following paragraphs I will provide the rationale for my point of view.

To begin with, university courses do not carry any gender related identity. Looking at the description of programs in university booklets one cannot find any masculine field or feminine one. Thus, for instance if a university is admitting more female students in nursing, it should give an explanation for the reason. Another paramount fact is that giving the same chance to both sexes in university admissions will break some stereotype, such as women have no control over their emotions so they are not a good candidate for law school. Or men are physically stronger than women and they can do construction jobs better. If changes happen and universities get the same male and female number of students in each field, it would help the society to see the capability of people without considering their sex.

Last but not least, it is wrong to define a subject as feminine or masculine. Interests and abilities should influence a person’s decision on what major she wants to study. For instance, my friend Kevin has a caring and supportive personality. He wants to be a nurse; however, the general assumption that nursing is for girls prevented him from applying to a nursing school. He was also afraid of the possibility of being the only male in a class full of females. If every program admits an equal number of boys and girls, situations like these can be avoided.

On the basis of the reasons mentioned above, I am inclined to believe that the education ministry should mandate all universities to take equal male and female students in every subject, as it will eliminate the sex discrimination in the society, and it will assist students to study the subject of their interest.
