Nowadays, it is common for youngsters to spend much of their leisure time in shopping malls and some people argue that it has a negative impact on them as well as the society. I fully support this view.

To begin with, the young age is the most productive and energetic period of human life. However, spending time idly in public places like malls will reduce their productivity and increase their chances of getting into debts due to unwanted expenses. If youngsters spend too much time in malls, they will also lose their focus on their studies. Worse still, they may also get into the habit of stealing money to buy things. They could even engage in drug trafficking or other morally questionable activities to earn money to support their spending habits.

When youngsters spend too much time in malls, it is not beneficial for the society either. Excessive time spent in the mall leads to wasteful purchases and consequently, there is an increase in the amount of waste generated. When youth waste their time in malls instead of engaging in studies or community service, it does not bode well for the society. Young people are the future of the nation and rather than wasting time on trivial pursuits like shopping, they should be focusing on building their career.

To wrap up, everyone has their right to spend their free time according to their will and wish. Even so, in my opinion, spending time idly in shops may lead to huge repercussions for both the individual and the society as this is a wasteful activity that does not offer any real benefits.

Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample

These days, a lot of youngsters like to spend their leisure time at shopping malls. This can have a negative impact on them and on the society in general. I mostly agree with this statement and this essay will show you why.

Firstly, shopping centers can be a safe place for young people to socialize with their friends under parents’ supervision. One adult can supervize them from afar, but the young ones can still feel free around their colleagues. For example, children can be left in the food zone or in the playground zone, with only a few steps between a parent and themselves. As such, shopping malls can help with developing the children’s social skills.

However, such centers can have a negative effect on the young ones, especially the food court where there are mainly fast food stands. Adolescents and children in general tend to be very easily influenced and attracted to junk food, and in this day and ages, obesity is a significant problem. Sadly, these shops advertise almost only these kinds of food. As such, the temptation is bigger in malls. Also, because the shops advertise expansive, new clothes in small sizes in general, the young people can feel inadequate and unsure if they compare themselves with what is displaying in window shops.

To conclude, nowadays, children tend to spend their free time at shopping complexes. This can affect them and the society, and not in a positive way. These centers can be where they meet their friends in a guarded environment, but also a place that can amplify their insecurities.
