These days, the media focus more on conflicts and emergencies than positive news. Some people argue that this coverage of bad news has a negative impact on the society. I partially agree with this statement.
On the one hand, the airing of emergency news certainly has some advantages. Firstly, it alerts people about the impending disaster. This way, it enables them to move to a safer place. For example, news of impending storm or other disasters saves thousands of lives. Likewise, when media reports about riots or civil wars, people can take adequate preparations to stay safe. In recent times, widespread coverage of the Corona virus pandemic helped people take adequate precautionary measures to avoid getting infected. So, obviously, news of disasters or emergencies is beneficial in some way.
On other hand, excessive coverage of negative news makes people fear for their safety. They start assuming that the world is a dangerous place to live in. This makes them feel unsafe both at home and outside of it. Needless to say, a lot of people these days have trust issues. They constantly hear about news stories of violence and betrayal and a result many of them cannot trust even their near and dear ones. Unfortunately, this leads to rising levels of stress and anxiety.
To conclude, media coverage of bad and emergency news has both positive and negative impacts on the society. It makes people aware of the dangers surrounding them. At the same time, it makes them fear for their safety. Hence, I can only partially agree with the argument that reports of problems and emergencies have a negative impact on society.
