It is an irrefutable fact that shopping online has become increasingly popular these days. In this regard, there is a possibility that online shopping would lead to the closure of brick and mortar stores in cities and towns in the future. This essay will discuss the possibility of this happening.

To begin with, the vital reason for the closure of physical stores in future is that consumers are quite satisfied with the unique shopping experience provided by online sites. This is because they have wide varieties of shopping options to choose from coupled with fast and reliable delivery channels which makes most of the customers prefer e-commerce sites over traditional stores. For instance, recently, in Bengaluru many renowned stores had to shut down because of the change in shopping preferences of customers. Consequently, given the fact that e-commerce companies have entered into almost every sector, there is a high possibility that retail stores will eventually perish.

Another compelling reason that the e-commerce giants will succeed over retail shops is that they have larger capital base and lower overhead cost. These companies have enormous net worth to afford substantial marketing cost to penetrate the market despite the competition from the stores. For example, Amazon has launched plethora of drones for initiating faster delivery which would decrease the manpower cost dramatically. As a result, although these companies incur huge capital expenditure, the income generated over a period of time is multifold which makes them market leaders and thus lead to the elimination of the traditional stores.

In conclusion, it can be anticipated that e-commerce companies will acquire the entire market share in the future because they provide exceptional client service and are efficiently able to reduce the overhead expenditure.

    Online shopping has seen a massive boom and this trend is likely to grow even more in the years to come. Some people think that with the dominance of online shopping, brick and mortar stores will become obsolete. In my opinion, while the ecommerce business continues to take flight and achieve unprecedented growth, offline stores will take a hit but they will not shut down.

    Due to the pandemic, there has been an astronomical surge in terms of people purchasing online. Those who normally shop offline too are forced to change their purchasing habits. At such a time, the ecommerce powerhouses of the world such as Amazon, Alibaba, Flipkart etc have come to the fore and are cashing in on this demand. In addition to the pandemic, there is ease of use associated with online buying. With the mere click of a button, one can get their desired products delivered within a matter of days at home. For example, my sister purchases everything from groceries, make-up and beauty products online. Moreover, there is a new trend called livestream ecommerce where customers buy products online in real time. This is a 200 billion dollar industry in China and is slowly picking up in other countries such as America and India as well. Thus, online shopping will continue to see unparalleled growth in the future.

    While the purchasing power of consumers is unmatched online, I believe people will not stop visiting offline stores either. When it comes to budgeting and buying household items and groceries, the general crowd always visit their nearby stores. The advantage of going to the market is that you can see the product for yourself and assess it. For example, my mother is very particular about vegetables and fruits we bring home from the market as she carefully handpicks them and ensures there is no damage. Another hindrance when shopping online is that you cannot try on a T-shirt or jeans. When the product arrives, you realise, there is a size issue or a manufacturing defect which can make the entire shopping experience unpleasant. Therefore, the offline experience is still very relevant and most people will still patronise this medium.

    In the debate of online versus offline, online will definitely generate more sales. To conclude, while purchasing habits will continue to be dominated online, offline buying has many benefits of its own to stay afloat.
