It has been argued by certain people that English may become the only global language in the future because of the development of the tourism industry, where English is widely used. This essay will discuss both the benefits and drawbacks of having a common language across the world.
On the one hand, having a global language like English, which is commonly spoken throughout the world, opens the window for trade, education, and integrity. There are a lot of new global opportunities that can be grabbed / explored without the need for transcribers. Moreover, most of the miscommunications that happen in critical discussions because of language barriers can be reduced to a great extent.
On the other hand, there is a possibility that many minority languages will cease to exist if English becomes the only global language. A language can exist only if people belonging to a community use it continuously for their everyday interactions. What’s more, a language is a lot more than a means of communication. Generally speaking, languages are not only a medium for communication but also a reflection of people’s customs and culture. The problem is that when a language dies the culture associated with it will also die. This is bad. A language is the identity of people. When it goes, they lose that identity. Another problem is that ancient wisdom preserved in that language will also be lost.
To conclude, although there are many benefits to having English as the global language, there are many downsides too. A universal language will destroy other languages and the cultures associated with them.
