Band 7 IELTS essay sample

In the current times there has been a continued increase in the world’s human population. Some people are of the opinion that this is the greatest threat facing the humankind currently.  I totally agree with this statement. This essay  will explore the reasons to support this argument and look at the things that are causing this problem.

One reason that has led to the rise in population is the advancement in medical sciences. The break throughs in world of medicine have made it possible for people to live longer. Earlier people would die at a very young age due to a range of illnesses such as smallpox, diphtheria, tuberculosis. Vaccines and immunisations have eradicated many of these illnesses from the face of this world. Another reason for this population explosion is because we are living in more peaceful times than in the past. In the olden times vast number of people used to die in battles which used to happen quite frequently and in large scale.

The population increase is the greatest problem faced by humankind because it is the mother of all the other problems such as climate change, global warming that we  are facing currently.  Firstly, to feed this huge population many steps are being taken  such as deforestation, farming of plants and animals in large scale through artificial methods. This is not only destroying the homes of other living creatures but also disrupting their natural way of living on this planet. Secondly  the waste produced by this population is polluting the air and water thereby harming the other life forms and contributing to ill health of the world.

To sum up, developments in medical sciences and living in much more peaceful times are some of the causes for the continued rise in the world population. I believe strongly that it is greatest problem challenging the humanity in present times as it is the root cause of all the other problems we are facing in the current times.
