The chart illustrates the percentage of owned and rented properties in England and Wales during the period of 1918 to 2011. Overall, the trend had reversed. In the beginning of period, almost 80% of the population were staying in rented houses while the share of homeowners was more in 2011. In 1918, approximately 78% of families were residing in rented houses which reduced to around 68% in 1939; remained same till 1953. This had further plunged to reach 50% in 1971. On the contrary, owned households had increased from 22% to half till 1971. Owned households had experienced outward movement till 2001. Their proportion was increased from 50% to 60% in 1981, and around 70% in subsequently decades. On the other hand, the trend was inverse for the rented families as their share had substantially reduced from 50% to around 30% in 2001. However, year 2011 had experienced marginally surge in the rented families from 31% in 2001 to around 36% in 2011.
