Speaking practice questions and answers
The following questions were asked in an IELTS speaking test held recently.
Examiner: Where do you live now?
Candidate: I live at Calicut, a big town in the South Indian state of Kerala. Calicut is famous for its cultural heritage and its shops selling delicious sweets.
Examiner: Let’s talk about your home.
Candidate: I live in an old home built by my grandfather. It is a few kilometers away from Calicut town.
Examiner: Can you describe it, please?
Candidate: Sure. It is a spacious home with a tile roof and mosaic floors. It also has a large backyard and a garden.
Examiner: What is your favorite room in the house?
Candidate: My bedroom. That is where I spend much of my spare time. I have a small library in my bedroom. It also has a large window opening to the garden.
Examiner: Why is that so?
Candidate: Well, I guess that is because I feel relaxed when I am in my room. Also, it is the only space in my house where I get some privacy. So, yeah, maybe that is why I like it so much.
Examiner: In which part of the country do you live?
Candidate: I live in the south west part of India.
Examiner: What do you like about it?
Candidate: Kerala is green and clean, but it isn’t just the scenic beauty that I like about my state and town. Calicut, my hometown, is full of friendly people who go out of their way to help others. Also, we make delicious sweets.
Examiner: Let’s talk about science. Do you like science?
Candidate: Of course. That is why I did MSc in Physics. I have always been interested in science. I have also won several prizes at science exhibitions.
Examiner: Do you watch scientific shows on TV?
Candidate: Sometimes. I like watching Discovery Channel. Their programs are very informative.
