It is often debated whether young people should engage in voluntary work or not. Some people believe that this involvement is beneficial for youngsters while others countering this idea are afraid of potential adverse effect on their careers. This essay will examine both views and then clarify why I believe there are stronger arguments to support youngsters’ participation in unpaid work.

There are several reasons to consider non-remunerative work as a beneficial option for young people. One of them is that volunteering is a precious opportunity to acquire precious work experience, especially for newcomers to labor market. To illustrate, participating in unpaid intern programs could provide valuable skills to students to increase their employment chances after graduating. In addition, being citizens, young people should assume their social responsibility by engaging in pro-bono work. In this way, they can contribute to developing the society that would in turn provide benefits to them. 

On the other hand, it is purported by many that engaging in unpaid work / undertaking voluntary work would hurt young people’s career prospects. People have this opinion because voluntary work often takes up a lot of time and does not provide any monetary benefit. For this reason, they argue that young people should focus on their studies instead of engaging in voluntary work.

In conclusion, I believe that both arguments have their merits. On balance, however, I feel that the advantages of engaging in unpaid work outweigh the disadvantages because it enables young people to gain worthy work experience and provides them an opportunity to serve the society.
