Band 8 IELTS essay sample
The question of how well we can spend our leisure time often arises. While some people think watching sports is a way of squandering your time, others feel that it is a good way to pass time. I believe that there is no standard answer to this question and it depends on the amount of time they spend watching sports.
It is true that individuals can benefit from the appreciation of sports events. To be more specific, when they watch sports, they have the opportunity to learn positive qualities of athletes such as persistence and insistence. Consequently, with these qualities, they can overcome some difficulties they are doomed to encounter in their private or professional lives and thus prepare themselves for their success.
However, I believe that spending too much time watching sports cannot be justified. Sports events last at least a few hours and they are held on most weekends, so this makes up for a large amount of time over the course of a year. Especially for younger fans, the time used could be better spent on other activities. For instance, if they work out during this time, their health can be enhanced, since exercise can reduce their possibilities of being afflicted by some diseases such as high blood pressure and obesity by burning the excess calories and accelerating their metabolism. In addition, if they allocate this time to further study, they are more likely to find a good job or increase their chances of promotion.
In conclusion, while people can benefit from watching sports in their leisure time, if they spend a lot of time for this pastime, it is more likely to have detrimental consequences for them.
