Band 8 IELTS Essay Sample
Environmental pollution has been a major concern in today’s society, and some people feel that governments should raise the price of fuel to resolve this issue. In my opinion, it may help to some extent; however, this is not the only solution to tackle this problem.
To begin with, increasing the price of petrol can help reduce the environmental pollution to some degree. In other words, excessive use of cars releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which is detrimental to the environment. If the price of petrol is increased / hiked), individuals will start to use their cars less often and this in turn can decelerate the rate of air pollution. However, the increase in the cost of petrol will not stop the environmental pollution. Besides, the fuel price determines the market prices of other essential commodities, and increasing the price can affect poor and middle class families.
On the other hand, governments can take other measures to mitigate these problems. A better solution is to invest in renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and tide rather than non-renewable resources like coal and petrol. For example, solar power in the United States has proven its efficiency in energy production. Second, by improving public transportation and reducing the cost of traveling, the government can encourage more people to use public transport; this practice can help clean the environment and reduce traffic.
To conclude, I strongly believe that the hike in the petrol price is not the best solution to this problem. Improving the efficiency of public transport and investing in renewable energy sources are better alternatives that ought to be considered.

Although some people believe that increasing the price of gasoline would be the best solution to resolve air pollution, as the most important environmental issue; I would disagree with them. In my view,
it is not the best solution as there are other pivotal factors which play the leading roles in this problem. Furthermore, an uncontrolled increase in fuel price would lead to rampant inflation.
Firstly, the advocates of increasing oil price might think that people would
avoid using their private vehicles because of the fuel expenses and consequently,
the pollution that caused by car’s fume would be lessened. However, this would be
the correct case in some places, but in my opinion, cars’ fume plays a minor role in
this environmental issue. It is manifest that the industries, in which the required energy
is generated by burning the fossil-based fuel, would generate much more amount of pollution than the vehicles. Therefore, the concentration in this issue should be given
to either move such factories to the other places or to change their energy consumption
method.
Secondly, imposing expensive charges to the transportation system could affect the economy adversely. For example, the price of goods such as daily used groceries, vegetables, and other households can increase considerably because of the
higher transportation costs. This extra cost can put the pressure on underprivileged people as well as the middle class and ultimately, lead to a higher inflation rate and economy instability.
In conclusion, I tend to stick to the idea that the negative consequences of increasing fuel price are more than its benefits. Therefore, governments should
figure out other effective solutions such as relying on green energies (e.g. solar source) to deal with environmental issues.
