Some people believe raising the minimum age for driving is an effective way to reduce road accidents. This essay will discuss why the idea of increasing the legal age will not be the best way to increase road safety.
Raising the legal age for driving motorbikes and cars is a good way to bring down the accident rates. Teenagers lack maturity and experience in driving. Speed fascinates them as it gives them thrill and excitement. If we look at the statistics, it is easy to see that most accidents are caused by teenagers. By contrast, elder people are good at driving and they also tend to abide by the traffic rules. Increasing the driving age will help us reduce the incidences of accidents to some extent.
However, according to the study conducted by students on road safety it is understood that the majority of reported cases are related to drunk driving. Strict rules should be implemented against drinking and driving as people tend to lose control over the vehicle because of the effect of alcohol. Another way to increase road safety is to encourage people to use public transport. Use of public transport not only reduces road accidents but also helps reduce pollution. The government also needs to improve the quality of roads to reduce accidents.
This essay argued why increasing the legal age for driving is important. However, it is not the best or only way to increase road safety. Actually, a better option is to enact strict rules to prevent drunk driving. Building better roads and enforcing strict traffic laws will also help.
