History tells us how we reached where we are. It tells is about the achievements of our ancestors and the mistakes they made. Some people argue that learning history is a useless / fruitless pursuit while / whereas others argue that it is crucial and hence should not be neglected. In this essay, I will discuss both the views and explain why I feel history is an important subject which should be studied by each one of us.
History is not a useless subject. There are lots of things we can learn from history. This learning is essential to avoid making the same mistakes that our forefathers did. Learning everything from our own experience is quite expensive. It is not necessary either because there is a wealth of knowledge we can obtain from history. Our history teaches us that if we do not stand united, we will be conquered by invaders who are only interested in exploiting us. History teaches us about our glorious past and makes us proud of our heritage. Learning history is essential to ensure that slavery, colonization and holocaust will not repeat. History also keeps us stay connected to our roots.
On the other hand, there are arguments against learning and teaching history. Some people feel that we have nothing to learn from history. In their opinion, history is all about dates that are no longer relevant today. Another argument against learning history is that there are not many jobs available for people who major in history. While these arguments are true to some extent, in my opinion, history should still be taught in schools because we have to learn from our past so that we can avoid making the same mistakes that our ancestors made. Learning history is essential to stay connected to our roots and be proud of our heritage.
To put it in a nutshell, unquestionably learning history requires time, it is part of our culture and is the identity of the nation. Hence, it should be studied by everyone across the globe.
