Although a small number of people insist that a locality should consist of only similar looking houses and for this reason a newly constructed house should replicate the older ones, others are of the opinion that people should have the freedom to choose a design of their liking.
In my opinion, the government must interfere in architectural matters only when it can encourage tourism. The optimistic edge to sticking to old style houses is that it assists in retaining the ancient architecture, which has been a part of society for decades. In addition, it can promote tourism significantly. For example, blue houses in Jaipur have attracted many tourists. Besides, banning new designs can help bring uniformity and create an aesthetic effect.
On the other hand, a home means different things to different people and not everybody may appreciate having to live in a home that looks exactly like other homes in the vicinity. People have their own preferences when it comes to their homes. Some might want to live in a large home. Some might want a two-storey house. And there are also people who may want to add outdoor living spaces to their homes. If people are forced to stick to a government approved construction plan, they will not be able to build a home of their liking.
To recapitulate, a home is a personal space and people should be allowed to choose a design they like. There may be some minor benefits to sticking to a standard design, but in my opinion, variety in the designs make the homes look more appealing.
