The issue of whether people should live in a horizontal city, or a vertical city has sparked a heated debate. Some people advocate the idea of residing in a horizontal city whilst others prefer to stay in a vertical city. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and express my view.
On the one side, vertical cities cannot be expanded due to space constraints. The expansion is only possible by constructing skyscrapers. Gigantic tall buildings are common in cities like New York and London, where there is no scope of horizontal expansion as vacant land is scarce. Additionally, the appreciation of real estate is far greater in such cities due to the limited inventory of apartments and penthouses. Also, these cities are often congested and populated with robust public transportation.
On the other hand, horizontal cities are sparsely populated and have land abundance. Thus, property prices are affordable in such cities. Moreover, citizens can buy spacious houses with a lawn. What is more, a city with a large area usually faces fewer traffic issues due to wide roads. For instance, New Delhi is less congested than Mumbai because Mumbai is located on the seashore. Hence, it has no land for widening roads while Delhi is immune to such issues as the city has sufficient land to widen its roads. It is for these reasons why it is wise to opt for cities with excess area.
To conclude, after discussing both sides of the argument, it is not hard to say that the city with a large area has an edge over a vertical city due to cheap property prices and fewer traffic issues.
