Band 8 IELTS essay sample

Pollution has become a global problem and each nation is trying hard to deal with this problem. Amidst all these, a few people have come up with a viewpoint that the government should impose higher tax on industries as they are the major contributor of pollution. However, many people including me disagree with this suggestion as I think that there are numerous other ways to combat the effect of pollution. This essay will discuss the viewpoint of both the parties and will also present my opinion on the same.

To commence with, some people have a school of thought that industries cause high level of pollution by emitting harmful gases, discharging chemical waste into water bodies, and burning coal and petroleum. They are damaging the environment brutally. Hence, they should pay for their wrong deeds. I agree with the argument factories play an important role in creating environmental problems.

However, they are not solely responsible for the degrading condition of this planet. Each and every individual is contributing towards increasing pollution. Therefore, we all should take the responsibility of our negligence and work hard for the betterment of the nature. There are plenty of people who agree with my opinion that we should employ other methods of mitigating pollution rather than increase the taxes. Increase in taxes will not make industries realise their mistake. Rather, it will be easier for them to continue their disastrous activities after paying a small amount of fine. Hence, it will further increase the pollution to a great extent.

The government should formulate stringent rules for the protection of environment. Firstly, afforestation should be promoted. Secondly, the usage of unnecessary vehicles should be banned. Thirdly, wastage of water should be stopped and plans for conservation of water should be implemented. Fourthly, burning of coal, petroleum and plastic in the open air should be prohibited and strict punishment should be given to the offenders. Lastly, we as responsible citizens should work hard towards mending our ways by using renewable sources of energy and limiting our use of private vehicles.

To recapitulate, I would like to assert that there are better ways to deal with this issue rather than imposing taxes. All the individuals should work hard toward taking care of our planet as we are the main culprit. The government should also be more serious about environmental protection and enact stringent laws. By taking all of these measures we can certainly take care of environmental damage.

The contamination of the environment is a burning issue of the hour for almost every second country. People have come up with the two different approaches to tackle this problem one is to impose excessive duties
on industries because they are the major contributors while others think including me that the government should use other appropriate actions to minimize pollution.

The sanctions will influence businesses to be more materialistic. Today every firm is facing the challenges of high cost along with competition. They are working on small margins to retain their market share. But, with the enforcement of extra tax, they either have to cut down production cost or increase the prices. Particularly, they will opt for cheap manufacturing for what they have to overlook the procedures of dumping wastes and also exclude certain eco-friendly procedures. Therefore, it could be an indirect force to go for malpractices. Whereas, the regulations should be such as to spread awareness.

Indeed, the government can set up environmental standards. These standards should include sustainable use of energy, industrial wastage handling and recycled material for packaging and so on. Moreover, for motivation, the top participants could be announced crown corporation or some rebate on duties might be given. These actions will not provide an effective framework without causing consumers indirectly.

In conclusion, pollution is a matter of awareness not a matter of money. Businessmam’s opinion could be changed by strict rules not by taking money.
