Some people argue that the cause of breaking the law is due to genetic factors while others believe that offenders are heavily influenced by the environment. I believe that the individual’s psychology and mental development are driven by the environment which leads to committing the offense due to its far more effects.
On the one hand, being born in a specific family, an individual would inherit traits due to the related genes of the parents. In other words, being raised in a family in which parents are criminals, people typically have a foundation to not abide by the laws. To illustrate, they are more likely to convict a crime when they get exposed to related circumstances, such as poor quality of living. This means that if they face harbors in life which cause mental pressure, they might get involved in unlawful activities. For instance, not having a well-paid occupation to cover their basic costs such as paying monthly bills, people might fall prey to an unruly activity that helps in supporting their family financially.
Apart from the impacts mentioned above, I believe that without experiences through life, the personality of a person would not mold completely. If people interact with others and experience during the time, it would help significantly in shaping their personality. In other words, having specific interactions such as law-abiding friends could affect one’s beliefs immensely, resulting in a person deciding to behave in a particular way that is morally acceptable individually. Similarly, being accompanied with those who do unlawful activities could be an incentive in participating in offending a crime.
In conclusion, although it seems that the role of genetics in people’s convicting a crime is undeniable, the impacts of the environment in nurturing people’s character and actions are far more than genes and inherence.
