Band 8 IELTS essay sample

In a little over a decade, the meaning of parenting for some people has changed the world over. While some people feel that parents should supervise the activities of their children, others think they should not. In my opinion, they should. Let us delve deeper into both the given schools of thought with my own perspective, in the subsequent paragraphs.

On the one hand, it could be argued that children should be provided with a sense of freedom. First and foremost, this is essential for children to grow into responsible adults. To elaborate, if parents provide total freedom to their children, not only will they learn to think independently, but they will also perform their day to day tasks without help.  In addition, providing young ones freedom can help them to express themselves well. In other words, as children have the freedom of thought, they will be able to live their life true to their beliefs. To cite an example, Dr. Sigmund Freud, the eminent psychoanalyst in his study on human behaviour and cognitive skills has asserted that children who had experienced more freedom in their formative period could express their feelings better than the others.

However, I side with those who believe that parents should always supervise their little ones. Primarily, by monitoring / watching over their activities, parents can keep track of their day to day life. To clarify, childhood is a formative period for children. If parents do not oversee / supervise their activities, their kids may fall into bad company. Moreover, supervising their young ones is a great way for parents to inculcate moral values in them. To substantiate, as children need love, affection and understanding, supervising them closely enables parents to develop these qualities in them. Furthermore, if parents look after their children’s activities, it will help to build intimate relations between them. To explicate, parents and children could understand each other’s feelings more because parents build a strong relation with children by offering their time to them. To illustrate, a survey conducted by UNICEF in 2018 in the US, on a group of 500 children, ranging between 8-15 years revealed that 85% of them showed deeper relationship with their parents who spent more time supervising their activities.

To encapsulate, although it is undeniable that providing children with more freedom helps them to express themselves better, parents can stop them from going astray by supervising them closely. Therefore, on balance, I believe that parents should monitor the activities of their children.

Needless to say, parents play a vital role in the overall development of a child. Although, it is often argued that adolescents ought to have full liberty in their life whereas others believe that guardians must monitor closely their child day to day activities. This essay will discuss both perspectives and concludes with my opinion.
To begin with, It is an irrefutable fact that a child is brought up with father and mother’s love and affection. Regardless of this, if parents look after their children’s activities very closely. It enables them to understand a child’s strengths and weaknesses. Secondly, nowadays a young mind could involve in bad habits or addict to an unhealthy environment. Due to their elder’s supervision, prevention is possible from future problems. To exemplify, a recent survey conducted among many schools of a Vietnam city, revealed that teachers also advise students guardian to oversee their activities closely.
On the other hand, my view is that in order to be fearless and self-reliant in the current world. An individual has to have the freedom to lead their life and learn from their own mistakes. Consequently, this enhances the personality development of a child and broadens the horizon. Besides that, youngsters will be capable enough to take own decision which will aid for career prospects. For example, recent research conducted at Oxford University explained that children who are self-dependent are more likely to progress at a later life.
By way of conclusion, while it is true that parents supervision is important, however, self- awareness and independent qualities could be achieved only if children have their freedom.

As the years go by the meaning of parenting has changed for some people. While some people feel parents should supervise the activities of their children, other think the should act freely. In my opinion, parents should always supervise their children and their activities.

Some people could agree that children need to be provided with some kind of freedom. They argue it is essential for children to grow into responsible adults. If parents provide total freedom to their children not only will they learn to think independently, but the will also perform their day to day tasks without help. In addition, providing young ones freedom can help them to express themselves better and live their life true to their beliefs. Studies have shown that children who experienced more freedom in their formative period were able to express their feelings better than the others.

However, I side with those who believe that parents should always supervise their children. First, by looking after over their activities, parents can keeps track of their day to day life. Childhood is a shaping period for children and if parents do not supervise their activities they may not follow the right track. Second, children need love and affection, time and guidance and getting involved in their life is the way to do so. Finally, it helps to build intimate relations with them. Spending time together helps understand each others feelings and develop stronger relationships. A survey made in the US a few years ago, to 500 children, revealed that more than 80% of children showed a deeper relationship with their parents who spent more time getting involved in their activities.

To sum up, it is undeniable that providing freedom to children helps them to express themselves better, but getting involved in their activities is getting involved in their lives and that is what a children needs. Therefore, I strongly believe that parents should monitor their children’s activities.
