Band 8 IELTS essay sample
No two people can have the exact same opinion on a topic. It is frequently believed by some that it is preferrable to have friends who have the same opinions as them. This essay will argue that even though it feels good to be around companions who always share the same belief, it is beneficial to have friends who are not afraid to suggest different ideas.
Humans like to be around those who are similar to them. We befriend those who share the same interests as us and are like-minded. For instance, I feel very happy and comforted when my friend agrees with my suggestions. It makes me feel socially and emotionally accepted. As a result, it may be good for our egos and psychological needs to have friends who always agree with our views. However, having friends who always agree with us is not exactly good for our personal growth.
To transform ourselves, sometimes we need to be challenged. When we hear both sides of an argument, we can make a well-informed decision. To exemplify, say my outfit is inappropriate for my workplace. I would appreciate a friend who would disagree with me in order to prevent me from embarassing myself by violating the dress code of the company. For these reasons, friends who sometimes share different views add more value to our lives.
In conclusion, some people think that it is nicer to have friends who share the same opinions as them. Although having friends who always agree with us may satisfy our emotional needs, this essay argued that it is more important to have companions who may disagree with us at times. In my opinion, friends who sometimes disagree with us are a blessing as their difference of opinion usually opens up opportunities for self-improvement.
