Band 6.5 IELTS essay sample

Choosing a career is the most challenging decision of life. It can be difficult to say whether this decision should be taken alone or made with input from loved ones. In my opinion, it is best to find one’s career independently without taking advice from the dear ones.

On the one hand, firstly, focusing on one’s own preferences and skills provides a clearer path to the right career. In fact, everyone knows about their strengths and weaknesses more than their families know about them. Therefore, in spite of taking help and listening to one’s family members for career options, it is always advisable to listen only to oneself. Secondly, there are sometimes peer pressure from the family to become a doctor or an engineer irrespective of knowing the interest and inclination of their children on something different. For example, if someone wants to become a makeup artist because he/she loves it, the family members will always say negatively about this career as they will always want their child to do something in academics. As a result, their child will not progress as he/she was never interested in something their parents want him/her to do.

On the other hand, few individuals always need the support of their parents in making a decision of their career. Firstly, they believe that their parents will always give them the right suggestion as they want their children to climb the heights of achievements. Secondly, parents will never guide their children wrong. Thirdly, since they are taking care of their children, they are well aware about the capability of their children. So, for instance, if their child decides something which may be challenging and complex for him/her, they will not let their child choose it knowing their capabilities are different and are not matching this domain.

To sum up, it is clearly stated from the above discussion, career decisions are a matter of personal knowledge. Other people, even family, cannot understand your interest deeply as one knows about one’s own self. Furthermore, it is better to do whatever pleases one.
