According to some people, wealth makes people happy. I agree with this view to a great extent because rich people can buy whatever they want and enjoy all the comforts and luxuries. Other factors that provide happiness are good health and good family life.
Many say that having a lot of money makes people happy. I feel that it is a common notion because money is required for purchasing all the basic needs for subsistence. In addition, when people have some money to spare after fulfilling their basic needs, it gives them a sense of security. Also, one would be in a position to donate to the needy in case a situation arises. For example, most of the rich people in the world like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett donate a sizable portion of their income for philanthropic causes.
Now I would like to touch upon the things other than money that can make people happy. I am quite certain that money is not the only means for all ends. Mental and emotional fulfillment is just as important, or sometimes more important, than financial fulfilment. I feel it is imperative to have a close knit family, supportive friends, a meaningful job and purpose in life to think beyond the good of one’s own self. These are the things that can make people truly happy. For example, we all know of some rich celebrities who are at the heights of financial success but are suffering from depression because they are divorced and have also left their friends in pursuit of reaching the top. As it’s said, it’s truly lonely up at the top.
I would like to conclude by sharing a simple thought that I have tried to follow all through my life. Money is important to get basic necessities but money beyond a particular amount brings more misery than happiness. Hence it is important to strike a balance between being money minded and appreciating the finer things in life which mostly come free of cost. For example, holding your baby in your arms for the first time does not cost money and that is probably why this joy is called priceless.
