People are keen to learn about foreign countries. Some people prefer to travel while others rely on different options such as TV and the internet to obtain knowledge about other countries. In my opinion, visual media certainly offers information about foreign countries; however, they cannot provide the immersive experience that traveling provides.
Television and the internet can only provide information. Maybe this information is sufficient to write a research paper on a foreign country or its people. However, this information is not sufficient for someone who wants to discover the soul of a foreign nation. Traveling is the only option in this case. When we travel to a foreign country, we get to live among the locals. We get to interact with them and taste their food and celebrate their festivals. For example, there is aa difference between actually playing Holi and watching a video of it on television. Likewise, is reading about Italian cuisine the same as actually eating pizza and pasta? You can find information online but in order to experience things you have to actually travel.
Having said that, not everyone can afford to travel. Also, it takes a lot of time and energy. If you are old, traveling probably is not for you. People who cannot afford to travel can certainly find information about other countries online or on television. Of course, this knowledge will not be comprehensive, but some knowledge is certainly better than no knowledge.
In conclusion, traveling is definitely the best way to learn about other countries. Media may provide information, but to truly experience life in a foreign country we have to be physically present there.
