Band 8 Agree or Disagree IELTS essay sample
It is argued that educational institutions make little or no contribution towards educating their pupils regarding health-related topics. In my opinion, this is true to a great extent. While I do admit that schools teach children about healthy eating and living habits, some topics are deliberately left out due to our narrow-minded societal thinking. I shall elaborate on these views and discuss a few other aspects of this topic in the forthcoming paragraphs.
My views on this topic are strengthened by a few personal experiences in my life. For instance, in a conservative country like India, sex education is considered a subject that is not to be discussed in any circumstance. It is deemed to be a matter that should be kept private and never brought up especially in front of the kids. Needless to say, while the syllabus does include chapters on sex education, they are rarely taught in many schools. Teachers will simply skip the lesson and ask students to read them on their own. The school curriculum also does not include lessons about emergency lifesaving procedures such as CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation), which is necessary to revive a person after they have a stroke. Although sports are encouraged in many schools, the importance of physical activities is not usually talked about.
In deep contrast to my views, some people believe that schools do provide enough health education. Many schools promote healthy eating by making students bring homemade food and banning unhealthy food in their canteens. However, apart from taking such initiatives, schools do not do much to educate children about critical health issues involving sexual welfare or emergency first aid.
To conclude, while it is true that schools offer some education about healthy eating and physical fitness, they often neglect topics such as sex education or emergency healthcare. Hence, to a great extent I agree with the argument that schools do not provide enough health education.
