Due to advancements in technology, it is now possible to watch films on handheld devices like phones or tablets and hence, some people argue that it is no longer necessary to go to movies.  Others, however, disagree with this view and insist that in order to fully enjoy the movie, it has to be watched on the big screen of a movie hall. In my opinion, both options have merits and demerits in equal measure. Even so, I prefer to watch movies on my phone or laptop.

On the one hand, watching movies on a small screen device is convenient and cost effective. You can watch the movie at a time convenient to you. You can pause and resume watching. This is not possible when you match movies in a theatre. Another advantage of watching movies on small screen devices is that it is highly cost effective. For a few hundred rupees, one can buy a monthly subscription of a movie streaming service and watch an unlimited number of movies. By contrast, movie tickets are expensive and it can cost anywhere from 1000-3000 INR for a family of four to watch a movie in a theatre.

On the other hand, theatres also have their plus points. The big screen in a movie hall can provide a larger than life experience to the viewer. Also, theatres are equipped with state-of-the-art surround systems that immerse the viewer in the movie. The movie hall also provides the right ambience for watching the film. In addition, films with high end special effects are best watched in the theatre. Likewise, 3D movies can only be watched in a theatre.

To summarize, portable devices provide the versatility and freedom which supersedes the experience and quality of theatrical entertainment. In my opinion, films of smaller screen format have garnered significant fandom and will continue to do so in the future aided by technological advancements.
