Band 8 IELTS essay sample

The issue of whether an individual’s success should be measured by his/her wealth has sparked a heated debate. Some people opine that being a wealthy person is the true definition of success whilst skeptics differ by saying that initiatives which can transform society outweigh personal wealth. This essay will discuss both sides of the arguments and express my view.

On the one hand, these days having robust net worth has become compulsory to live a good life.  Primarily, a heavy / hefty bank balance ensures a secure older age. A rich person) can spend his post retirement life comfortably. To exemplify, in India, due to poor social security from the government side, citizens who have high bank balance after retirement are considered more accomplished. Furthermore, money aids to afford luxuries. With high remuneration one can buy almost everything. However, this perception is not entirely right.

On the other hand, there are many achievements like social work and inventions which can define a person as a successful citizen. For example, any initiative which can improve the lives of millions of people is more significant than a good financial status. Albert Einstein, for example, was not wealthy yet he is known as the most accomplished scientist because of his inventions which have transformed people’s lives in many ways. Such contributions do make a person immortal.  Moreover, professionals like teachers, social workers, and government employees might not earn well but their contribution towards nation building is far more profound than that of a rich person.

To conclude, after discussing both sides of the argument, it is not hard to say that the people who devote their time to improve others’ lives are truly more successful than the ones who have high personal wealth.
