Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample
People differ in their opinion when asked about their hobbies. While many prefer to spend their free time with technology others want to enjoy their leisure time away from gadgets. Personally, I accord with the latter view as people are already surrounded by these machines in their daily routine; therefore, avoiding these e- tools is beneficial for their physical and mental well-being.
Enjoying hobbies without the usage of technology has a plethora of benefits. First, people can unwind themselves by doing different physical activities which help them to stay fit. For instance, many opt for gardening as a favourite pastime. This not only keeps the environment clean but also provides an opportunity to get physically active. More importantly, people can utilise this time to socialise and interact with other people and thus get rid of their loneliness. Also, this physical interaction is of utmost importance for elderly group to avoid neurological conditions such as dementia and depression. People can also volunteer, write or travel. All of these activities help them spend their time in meaningful and enjoyable ways.
Conversely, there are those who prefer hobbies that require some sort of technology. For example, watching TV, playing video games or surfing the internet is the favourite pastime of many people. Smart phonses, these days, have many applications that enable people to use their time in both useful and useless ways. In my opinion, however, hobbies that require technology have more downsides than plus sides. Excessive screen time is harmful for health as it makes people physically inactive. Also, if children take up web browsing as a hobby, there is a possibility of them stumbling upon sites inappropriate for them. This can affect their development.
To recapitulate, although these technological innovations may appear appealing to people in their free -time, they obviate physical interactions and workouts. Hence, I firmly reiterate that it is more beneficial for people to spend their valuable time communicating physically and choose hobbies which do not need gadgets or the internet.
Band 7.5 essay sample 2
Some people prefer hobbies associated with (or related with) technology while other people prefer hobbies without technology. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
People have conflicting views about whether their hobbies should have a linkage to technology or not. I believe that reasons for their choices vary, depending on individuals’ own situations.
On the one hand, myriads of people choose hobbies involving technology for two reasons. Everyone now has access to gadgets and internet. Mobile phones and computers come with interesting games and movies which people can play or watch in their leisure time. Consequently, people become addicted to them. Another reason is that computer games now simulate the real experience. For example, you can play soccer on the phone without flexing a muscle and this experience is as real as it can get. Families are becoming nuclear and people are becoming lonelier. This also encourages them to spend time on their gadgets. Those who spend a lot of time on their gadgets will eventually start becoming addicted to them. Another reason is that life is more hectic now and most people do not have the time to engage in a pastime like bird watching or coin collection. So, they just turn to their phone or computer.
On the other hand, it is understandable why some people possess preferences towards conventional hobbies, such as basket ball and football, to name a few. It is widely acknowledged that most people nowadays attach more importance to their health. Generally speaking, people who do not want to get physically active will choose tech-related hobbies whereas those who want to flex their muscle will choose conventional hobbies. Time is another factor. Pursuing a traditional hobby requires more time than playing a game on the computer.
In my view, whether people pursue modern or conventional hobbies is their subjective choice, based on their own likeness. As for me, I have no interest in cutting-edge products, and I am into some traditional hobbies.
