People have different views about whether watching television is educational or harmful for children. While there are some downsides to watching TV for children, I believe that children can learn a plethora of things by watching the right content on the television.

On the one hand, watching TV in excess can have detrimental effects on children. Firstly, watching television for long hours can make children physically feeble and it may affect their eyesight. Secondly, in today’s jet set age most of the families are nuclear and both of the parents are working, so it is possible for the children to get exposed to harmful / inappropriate content. For instance, there is adult content in every movie and sitcom nowadays and also film stars are seen drinking alcohol and doing drugs on television. This could have a detrimental effect on children.

On the other hand, watching TV can be beneficial for learning new things for the children, if they are allowed to watch for limited time and under the supervision of elders. I believe there are numerous channels such as Discovery, National Geographic and Animal Planet which telecast programmes that are educational and thus enhance a child’s cognitive skills. These types of channels broadcast episodes related to science in daily life, flora and fauna, and biodiversity. Children can learn a lot about nature by watching these on the television.

In conclusion, watching TV in excess can be detrimental for children, but I believe that it could be educational if seen if watched for a short amount of time under parental supervision.

While some people believe that watching television has detrimental effect on children, some others believe that the television helps children in their education. In my opinion, if children watch television regularly, it adversely affect not only their health but also their mental wellbeing. Therefore, television usage should not be encouraged among children.
Firstly, it is indubitable that some TV shows are so addictive that children squander their time by watching these shows. Thus, it can seriously affect their studies. It is irrefutable that instead of watching useful educational programs, an overwhelming number of students would prefer watching entertainment programs. Also, advertisements incite children to pester their parents to buy unwanted things, which can put tremendous financial strain to the family.
Another point to consider is that media could affect the health of children. In other words, rather than taking up a sport as hobby, if children are more interested in watching television shows, it can affect their physical wellness. For example, sitting idly with snacks to watch program results in the intake of more calories than they burn through physical activities.
Finally, children exposed to violence in movie and other television program are tend to behave more aggressively. That means, some films might encourage children to develop anti-social as well as criminal behaviour. For instance, in some movies, the main character might be involved in criminal activities, which set a bad example among children.
To conclude, there are myriads of disadvantages when children watch television. Parents ought to make children aware of the hidden risk behind watching television.
