Band 8 IELTS essay sample
While some people think that the objective of prisons is to punish criminals, others argue that the primary responsibility of prisons is to rehabilitate people. Judiciary operates in a country to dispense justice and to facilitate the rehabilitation of convicted criminals. Prisons play a crucial role in this. Hence, in my opinion, the main objective of prison is to rehabilitate criminals. Furthermore, this essay will argue that punishment does not help to reduce the crime rates.
Many people argue that prisons of a country aim to improve the behaviour / conduct of criminals through rehabilitation. This essay supports this notion because punishment can never help to have responsible and law abiding citizens. For instance, most of the criminals who decide to become good citizens after serving their time in prison believe that the reason behind their changed behaviour is the rehabilitation provided in the prison.
However, many people believe that the primary role of prisons should be to serve punishment to the people who do not respect the law. They think that governments should not spend tax money to rehabilitate criminals because punishment is enough to reduce the crime rates. This essay does not agree with this thinking because although punishment can help to serve the justice to people, it cannot help to reduce the crime rates. This is the reason why the crime rate is the lowest in most of the European countries that treat prisons as rehabilitation centres.
In conclusion, the judicial system is supposed to improve the behaviour of people and this can be achieved only when the prisons provide rehabilitation to the criminals. Moreover, punishment should not be considered as the primary responsibility of prisons because it does not help to reduce the crimes rates in a society.

More and more developing countries are expanding their tourist industries. Why is this? Is it a positive development?
In the age of globalization, countries are diverting a huge amount of money to the tourism industry. This is attributed to the benefits that it brings to nations and individuals.
Tourism plays a vital role in the economy of a country because foreign visitors spend thousands of dollar on accommodation, foods and travel when they visit tourist places throughout the nation. As a result, it pours money into the capital of the nation ultimately strengthens the financial muscles. This not only allows the government to employ such money in the development of other major domains like education and medicine but also encourages it to expand tourist areas to attracts more visitors. For example, India has recently opened access to new beaches which were prohibited in the past in Andaman and Nikobar islands because the GDP of island is rising at an unprecedented rate.
I believe that this is a positive development since tourism is a prime source of income for indigenous people who live in nearby areas of tourist attractions and companies which do businesses in it. As a result, they are less dependent on the benefits which the government provides to citizens and contribute in the economy of nation by paying taxes. As we all know, population and unemployment are growing at an alarming rate in the world. if governments do not expend tourism industry, it will compel people to get the benefits of unemployment that certainly exerts pressure on the financial budget of countries.
In conclusion, a growth in the tourism industry is vital and it benefits both citizens and nations.
