Some People Believe That Teenagers Should Be Required To Do Unpaid Community Work

Sample essay

People have different views on whether teenagers should be involved in voluntary work. A few people opine that youngsters should be made to help the society for free as it can prove to be beneficial for both them. I vehemently disapprove of this idea as teenagers are already burdened with academics and their free time should solely be dedicated towards other leisure activities. I shall elaborate on these points and discuss a few other aspects of this topic in the forthcoming paragraphs.

My views on this topic are strengthened by a few experiences in my personal life. For instance, in India, students from class 6th to 10th have to study at least 7 subjects a year. The school requires the children to be in the classrooms for nearly 8 hours a day. Apart from that, they are also given homework and assignments that they need to turn in the very next day. If the youngsters are forced to do social work after an exhausting day, the result could be detrimental. This will not only tire them physically but also wear them out mentally. Moreover, rather than forcing them to volunteer in their free time, kids should be encouraged to play a sport, learn a skill or read books as these activities will help them in the long run.

In deep contrast to my views, some people are of the opinion that youngsters have an obligation to assist their society. However, taking their freedom away for the welfare of humankind will not be useful to the young generation. During this phase of growth, they will not abide by these rules without developing resentment. Hence, the downsides of this practice far outweigh the negligible benefits of involving teenagers in voluntary work. Therefore, in my opinion, volunteering must be optional. Those who are interested in it should be encouraged to pursue it and those who have no interest in it should not be pressurized. If children engage in work they do not like, it will reflect in the quality.

Based on the elaborate discussion in the paragraphs above, we can conclude that although lending a hand for social work can make the youngsters empathetic and socially responsible, children are already weighed down by their academic syllabus and hence they should be motivated to participate in other activities rather than working for free.
