People have different opinions about whether history should be learned or not. While some people believe that such learning is useless, I believe that this acquisition is beneficial to the whole society.
It is understandable that some people oppose the practice of learning history. Humans experienced dramatic changes during the past decades or centuries, and the things occurred previously and the lessons created by ancestors may not make sense in modern society. For example, several decades ago, the roles of females were confined to performing domestic chores and this made them inferior to males, which is not acceptable in contemporary settings where women and men are equal. Another argument against learning history is that there are not many job opportunities for history graduates.
However, I agree with those who believe that history acquisition is beneficial to the whole society. It is generally acknowledged that in modern times we are in the same dilemma as our previous generations, sometimes, and learning history can help us to obtain solutions to some extent. This is mainly because history presents the successes and failures of our ancestors, and thus learning from them enables us to duplicate their achievement by avoiding making the same mistakes as them. Besides, most nations are trying their best to avoid the occurrence of world wars even though conflicts exist between them as they have learned the lessons from World War I and II.
In conclusion, while some historical lessons are not valuable in contemporary society, I believe the usefulness of historical knowledge should not be denied, and acquiring this knowledge can bring numerous benefits to the whole society.
