Band 8 IELTS essay sample
It is debatable whether senior people must be allowed officially to work after attaining the age of 65. Some people opine that this practice must be prohibited while others disagree with them. This essay will provide brief insights into both the viewpoints and show / prove why it is not advisable to prevent individuals from working on the basis of their age.
To begin with, people who advocate this ban emphasize that this restriction will help in creating more vacancies. When senior citizens are not able to work beyond a certain age, it will cause them to retire and thus positions left vacant can be used to provide job or promotion opportunities to those in waiting. They further term seniors as “white elephants” and slow contributors. Hence, enforcing a retirement age will boost the productivity of the organization.
On the other hand, people who oppose this restriction argue that prohibition to work on age-basis is discriminatory and contradicts one’s fundamental right to work/earn. Every person has the right to compete, work and earn as per his or her capacity. Just reaching a certain age does not imply that an individual has lost skill or strength to remain useful / competent in a job. For instance, most of the world’s top leaders such as Prime Ministers or Presidents are old and above 65. In my opinion, it is not fair to restrict anyone on the basis of age as this is violation of a person’s right to freedom and work. Furthermore, senior citizens are often the most experienced and thus they can contribute significantly to their jobs by virtue of their deeper knowledge. Besides, owing to certain stressful financial situations aged people might still need to earn and sustain themselves.
To summarize, though restrictions on working age tend to create more job opportunities for young people, it is not fair to stop old people from working. I conclude they must be allowed to work freely as long as they can or want.
