Some are of the opinion that giving children a free hand to make choices about day to day affairs (such as what to wear, what to eat and what to do for entertainment) is likely to result in a community in which, one only thinks about one’s likes and wants whereas, others feel that it is of paramount importance for the children to make decisions about their everyday life. In my opinion, children certainly need some freedom to make their own decisions; however, too much freedom does not benefit anyone.
To begin with, let’s discuss the drawbacks of allowing the children to take their decisions. Today almost all children are on some or the other social media platform. For instance, they are on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and so on. These platforms play a major role in the children’s life. The so-called social media influencers affect the day to day decision making of the children. For example, the clothes, shoes and accessories that today’s kids wear are picked up right from some influencer’s page. This leads to the development of the fast fashion trend and can turn out to be quite expensive for the parents who have to be continuously spending to buy their children new clothes. It is important for parents to discourage this trend as it will make children selfish. Likewise, a lot of kids do not understand the importance of eating healthy food and often end up eating junk and processed foods every day. When the content which is watched by the children is not moderated, it can lead to increase in violence and bad activities like taking drugs. In addition to this, they may end up losing interest in their culture and cultural values. Obviously, children cannot be given complete freedom to make their own decisions.
Allowing children to make their own decisions has a lot of benefits as well. It gives them a sense of purpose and independence thus preparing them for the future. They develop a variety of skills. For instance, playing strategy-based video games as a form of entertainment enables them to develop better decision making and problem-solving skills. Playing arcade based games, improves the reflexes of a person. They tend to be less stressed out when taking life changing decisions. Furthermore, they can hold only themselves accountable for the consequences of taking a bad decision. Acquiring all these qualities while growing up prepares them to take up leadership roles and solve the problems of the world.
In conclusion, children should certainly have some freedom to make their own decisions because it enables them to grow up into independent and confident adults. However, they are too young to distinguish right from wrong and hence it is important for parents to monitor their actions and guide them properly whenever they go off track.
