It is quite evident that many economically backward countries need assistance from international bodies. Some opine that financial help can address all the problems of poor nations while others argue that technical advice is more relevant. I believe both financial and practical support are crucial.

Financial assistance can greatly alleviate the sufferings of the under privileged nations. In many African countries, people cannot afford to buy the basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter. The monetary help provided to them by United Nations brings relief to the afflicted individuals. Pecuniary support can also help build proper roads and bridges and augment transportation routes. It can further establish the primary infrastructure needed for setting up educational institutes, healthcare centers and commercial establishments.

Financial relief / assistance alone does not help. The developing territories might probably lack the expertise to invest and implement the capital in a structured way. For example, in India, the massive Bandra-Worli link bridge spanning a considerable portion of the sea was constructed with the guidance of specialists from China. It could not have been built just by obtaining loans from global bodies. Sometimes, financial aid engenders corruption and increases indigent nations’ dependency on fund providers. For example, recently, auditors revealed that much of the foreign aid received by Uganda was being channelized to the private accounts of Ugandan officials. As a result, Britain revoked the plans to provide additional funding as it was clear that funds will not receive the intended beneficiaries

In summary, I feel financial help is vital to tackle the core needs of the poor provinces. However, proper investigation must be conducted to ensure that the funds are utilized appropriately. At the same time, international organisations should focus on developing the knowledge and skillsets of marginalized sections.
