Recently many people are debating on whether schools should have uniforms for students. Some individuals believe uniforms reduce socioeconomic disparities and allow children to focus only on studies rather on what they are wearing. While others argue that having uniforms does not have any positive impact on students and it also undermines one’s right to express one’s individuality. In this essay I will discuss both the viewpoints and validate/defend my opinion that having school uniforms does help.
To begin with, the school is a place of learning. In a school, students come from many backgrounds. Some might have a wealthy background, and some might be from modest background. If there is no uniform rich kids might wear fancy clothes of high brands and flaunt them in front of other students. Obviously at such a young age children might get attracted to such material possessions and ask their parents to get similar clothes, which might be hard for some parents. This fundamentally shifts the focus of students and parents to such trivial issues when in fact their main objective should be learning.
However, some might argue that having uniforms suppresses one’s individuality. It is true that individuals have their own preferences when it comes to clothing. For example, recently we saw many Muslim girls wanted to wear hijab to classrooms and schools having uniforms were not allowing them. This might oppress their rights, but one should understand that in schools every child is equal and acquiring life skills and knowledge are the only goals to accomplish in schools. They are always free to wear whatever they like outside the campus.
To sum up, even though having uniforms might undermine students’ right to express their individuality, it makes sure students have only one focus in school and thus it has a positive impact on their studies and character. Without uniform children might get lost in trivial issues and learning process might get impacted in the temple of learning.
