Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample

It is observed that a lot of time is being spent by children on their mobile phones. There are certain reasons such as lack of parental supervision and online classes behind this tendency. I believe that this is a negative / harmful development for the overall growth of a child.

The first reason for spending endless hours on the phone is the lack of parental attention. In today’s fast paced life elders are so immersed / absorbed in their professional life that they have  little or no time left for their wards. This creates an emptiness in a child’s life and to fill this vacuum children watch cartoons or videos on their mobile for longer hours. Secondly, in the last few years, due to the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic all the educational institutes were closed. To enable the students to study while at home, the government and school administrations launched e-Learning methods. Consequently, many students use their electronic devices for hours to attend their classes.

In my opinion, over use of mobiles have many detrimental effects on the mind as well as the body of the children. Addiction to smart phones makes younger ones spend hours just sitting and watching visual content. Consequently, they become less physically active and many health issues such as obesity and visual disorders arise from it. Moreover, excessive use of mobile phones adversely affects the creativity and emotions of a child. Children now prefer to live in virtual environment rather than spending time with their parents and friends. So, feelings like caring, compassion and sympathy do not develop in them. This prevents them from becoming a social and emotionally intelligent person. Along with this, mobile phones hamper the imagination of a child as every piece / bit of information is available there just a click away. The children do not brainstorm and prefer to use readymade material online. Thus, too much use of smart devices has many harmful effects on the holistic development of a child.

In conclusion, children use mobile phones for long hours to learn their lessons and to keep them entertained in the absence of their parents. And this practice has an adverse effect on their overall growth and development.
