Children these days prefer to attend live online classes from the comfort of their homes with the help of widely popular educational apps. They can choose to study a subject of their choice at their own pace and time as opposed to a fixed schedule in schools. Secondly, hundreds of thousands of games, videos and TV shows are available over the internet providing a constant source of readily available entertainment at their fingertips. Consequently, children resort to binge watching shows, chatting with friends on social media and playing online multiplayer games from an early age.
But the smart phone addiction brings with it a host of health problems and psychiatric issues. The younger lot hardly enjoys outdoor activities nowadays, and it has led to a huge uptick in childhood obesity and related issues. For example, cases of / incidences of childhood diabetes type-1 has more than tripled in the last 5 years in India and is set to overcome the number of old age diabetes patients by 2030 according to a survey conducted by Lancet magazine. Lastly, people who stare at their screens for a long time are more likely to suffer from depression and memory loss. Virtual interactions via social media sites are not mentally or physically engaging as real face to face meetings and may lead to loneliness and depression in the short term and dementia and Alzheimer’s in the long term.
In conclusion, although children can study and relax easily using their smart phones, it has caused a significant rise in health problems and depression, thus making the technological marvel a negative influence in the long run.
