Social media now plays a crucial role in our lives. It has changed our way of communicating to a greater extent. As a result, people are opting for social media to communicate, and to follow news and events. This essay will explore the pros and cons of using social media as a means of communication before arriving at a conclusion.
The main benefit of social media is that one can get a piece of information in seconds about anything such as sports, politics, weather etc. It is no longer necessary to watch news channels or read newspapers as news these days break on social media. Social media has also made distance irrelevant. You can stay connected with friends and relatives living in different parts of the world round the clock. Consequently, people living away from their family no longer have to suffer from homesickness as their family is just a video call or message away. Sitting in India, grandparents can now participate in the birthday celebrations of their grandchildren taking place in the US.
On the other hand, social media has also affected the warmth in relationships. Most people now have friends only online. They don’t know their neighbours nor do they look at anyone while traveling on buses or trains. They are glued to their phones. As for using social media for accessing news, the problem with this practice is that social media is an ocean of fake news and information. People share things without even checking whether the information is true or beneficial.
To recapitulate, as a means of communication, social media has both advantages and disadvantages in equal measure. In my opinion, people should use their common sense, before blindly believing everything found on social media. People also need to realize that online relationships cannot replace real relationships.
