Nowadays, technology plays a vital role in our day-to-day life. It is argued that the increasing rate of unemployment is due to technology, as robots and other technical devices have been taking the place of humans since the 18th century. I agree with this statement to a great extent.

To commence with, some restaurants have already started working with robots to serve the customer and they find that they are less likely to make mistakes so owners think that they should replace humans with robots in their workplace. Moreover, for example, a survey conducted in Singapore shows that 95% of food court people are pleased with new technical devices and this survey also shows that in the next 5 to 10 years customer service personnel are going to be replaced by automated assistants. Clearly, we will see more jobless people in the future. Furthermore, robots require just one time investment. While they do need maintenance, they do not have to be paid salaries and hence by deploying robots, employers can save labour costs.

In some sectors like mining, robots can actually work more efficiently than humans. These are hazardous occupations and it is quite common for humans employed in such jobs to suffer injuries or even lose their life. Because of these reasons, humans in such occupations are also being increasingly replaced by robots. In near future, robots may even perform surgeries or babysit. Obviously, technology is causing unemployment.

In conclusion, I do agree with the argument that technology is largely responsible for the growing levels of unemployment. A single machine can perform tasks that would normally take five or ten humans. Needless to say, humans are being replaced by robots and machines in many sectors and this trend will continue in the future.
