Band 8 IELTS essay sample

Humans are born with an expiry date. However, in today’s time, scientists can make everything possible. It is believed that scientists can make people live considerably longer. In my opinion, the drawbacks of living longer surpass the benefits due to alarming socioeconomic situations.

On the one hand, increasing life expectancy would help mankind in different ways. To elaborate on, if people start living longer than usual, they will be able to accomplish more and fulfil their dreams. Since professionals like scientists and technologists will be able to work for longer periods, they will also be able to discover and invent more for the world.

On the other hand, longevity has some serious repercussions that would have detrimental impact on the world. First and foremost, unemployment and poverty rate would increase substantially, as a result of longevity. Over 8 billion people already live on earth. If the death rate reduces and birth rate remains the same, the demand for resources will increase manifold. This could even lead to wars as nations will start fighting one another to grab the available resources.

To conclude, even though being able to live longer might seem beneficial, unless we can also increase the available resources, this development will have grave socio-economic repercussions that will ultimately affect everyone. Hence, in my opinion, this is largely a negative development.
