Currently we face the issue where university fees are on the increase on one hand and on the other hand graduates getting employed is looking bleak. Students therefore should take up courses which have higher job prospects. But that should not stop Universities from offering art subjects.

Not everybody learns to get employed. There are people who learn because of their love for a subject. History is one such subject. Historians spend years of their life trying to gather artefacts, information of how people lived in the past, how things were built. This is not something that people do just for money. Furthermore, understanding of our ancient civilisations how they lived and how they vanished from the face of the earth is a vital piece of information as we as a civilisation progress. Would this be possible if Universities wouldn’t offer art subjects?

Studying a subject, furthering your knowledge can be pursued at any point in one’s life. Of course, there are the young adults just out school who take up courses in the University with the aim of finding a job, starting their career. These students sure will have to research and pick a course that offers higher employment prospects. On the other hand, there are the mature, well settled students with philosophical bent of mind with thirst for knowledge, urge to find answers to questions about life. Where will they go if Universities don’t offer art subjects?

To conclude, although universities should offer courses which have a higher prospect of finding a job, that should not stop them from offering art subjects like History, Philosophy as there are not only people who go to university to get employed but there are the others who study purely because of their passion for learning and finding answers to questions which contribute to the well being of our society as a whole. Also, this drive for learning could happen at any stage in one’s life.
