Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample
Undoubtedly, mental disorders occur rarely compared to physical disorders. It has been observed that psychologically challenged people are less likely to be accepted by the public and physical disabilities are treated with more empathy than mental illness. I completely agree with this viewpoint and I will explain the reasons in this essay.
Scientific research shows that a few psychological disorders manifest at the later stage of life. Moreover, sometimes a person with a family history of mental illness or a traumatic experience is usually the one who becomes the victim of these types of illness. Although these diseases are rare, the society does not accept them because patients behave unreasonably in such cases. For example, people who suffer from split personality disorder often display different characters at the same time in unpredictable ways. In such situations, it is difficult to control them by regulating their behaviors. Hence, society is disrespectful to these people.
On the other hand, patients who have physiological illness are accepted by the society because these diseases can be cured by medications or therapies. The predominant factor is that they can communicate with patients as they are mentally stable whereas the connection cannot be established with mentally-ill patients. Consequently, many families abandon mentally unstable people.
To recapitulate, any illness related to health whether physical or psychological are harmful and they should be treated with medication and family support. However, the society only shows concern for physically ill people as mentally ill patients are difficult to deal with and behave unpredictably.

It is argued that the people with physical disabilities are more accepted than the mentally unstable people by the society, despite being affected by the illness in the same manner. However, i believe that people with mental disabilities are oftenly not accepted.
There is only one main reason why people do not properly deal with mentally unstable people. People with mental retardation behave unreasonably in some situations because they suffer from split personality disorder, and they often display different characters at the same time in unpredictable ways. So it becomes difficult to regulate the behaviour as ill mental processes are generally responsible for their conduct, which another person cannot understand that what makes them to act in that particular way. Anxiety, mood disorder, dementia are such disorders which are difficult to comprehend for the helpers oof mentally sick person. Hence, the society is disrespectful toward these people.
On the other hand, patients with physical illness are accepted by the society owing to some reasons. Firstly, these disabilities can be cured with the help of medications or surgeries due to the technological advancement, whereas as there are less number of mentally ill people, there are not many methods and mental difficulty staff who can cure such patients. Secondly, physically disable people can communicate and share their problems and feelings with others as they are mentally stable. Additionally, they are aware that if they will co-operate and will share their problems to the helper, they will surely recover and will get better assistance.
To conclude, i reiterate that no doubt mentally ill patients are difficult to deal with than physically ill people, but the society needs to be impartial towards them as they can also be cured.
