Band 9 IELTS essay sample

Mass media plays a crucial role in our everyday life, and it is widely used to stay in touch with our near and dear ones and also to communicate messages with our peer groups. In my opinion, mass media does have some demerits, but those are negligible compared to the advantages it brings to our lives.

To begin with, through radio, television and internet programs people can gain knowledge and information on almost every topic. For example, they can find health information, learn about environmental issues and stay updated on science and technology through mass media programmes. The radio, for example, is a major source of information for people living in remote areas. It enables them to stay abreast of the latest developments in the world.  If there were no radio, perhaps it would take them weeks or even months to receive national and international news. Television and the internet provide not only entertainment but also knowledge. For example, both children and adults can learn a lot about science, technology, history and wildlife through television channels such as Discovery and National Geographic. Obviously, mass media benefits our lives in numerous ways.

On the flip side, it does have some negative aspects. To start with, mass media can be quite addictive and it is not uncommon for people to spend inordinate amounts of time in front of their television or computer. Unfortunately, this practice hurts their health. It may also affect their social skills because couch potatoes are less likely to go out and interact with others. Another downside is that some content on the television and the internet is not appropriate for children. For example, if children get exposed to violent or obscene visual content, it can affect their behaviour.

In conclusion, the benefits offered by mass media certainly outweigh its downsides. Even so, it is important for users to limit the time spent on electronic devices to limit their exposure to harmful content and to ensure that they stay healthy and socially active.

These days technology has been advanced because of which more people are dependent on various sources like televisions, smartphones. On the other side of the coin, human beings are getting more addicted to smartphones where it has become a breathing tool for them. In my opinion, there are more advantages than disadvantages of mass media.

Firstly, with the help of handheld devices, a person can convey their messages to the other person sitting in any part of the world. These days communication is so reliable that messages are encrypted while they are sent to a receiver. For instance, people can send money from their smartphones by logging into their bank account at any time with the help of internet. People sitting in remote areas can get updated through news information by listening to a radio. Nowadays, social media is at boom and numerous people are browsing on different websites like Facebook and Twitter only to stay connected with their loved ones.

However, the public is getting addicted to smartphones and televisions as if they can not live without them. For example, a web series on HBO channel named as “Game of Thrones” gained huge popularity. This created a craziness among the viewers. One of the most important drawbacks is children may watch vulgar and obscene visuals from the internet which will hamper their mind.

To conclude, mass media has more pros with respect to cons. But an individual should restrain himself from long watching hours and should make children stay away from the harmful content.

More and more people are becoming seriously overweight. Some people say that raising the price of fast foods will solve these things. To what extend do you agree

The number of people that are obese is increasing alarmingly in our society. However, some think that if the prices of junk food rose, the problem would be eradicated forever.

First of all , I would say that raising the price of unhealthy food sounds like a good idea , mainly because it may prevent some from buying it . In addition , I believe that this measure also promotes indirectly the consumption of more healthy products since they tend to be really expensive.

On the flip side , I would say that more measures should be implemented if we really want to reduce the number of people who are over their ideal weight . This could be achieved by teaching children in schools how beneficial is to have a balanced diet . Furthermore , I would say that little has government do in the past to make people aware of the risks of having a diet based on fats and oils such as , different health issues and lower life rate which I personally believe is key in order to have a healthy lifestyle.

Not to mention the importance of playing a sport which will help us to eliminate the fat of our body and get rid of that extra weight . Moreover , walking or biking to work instead of taking the bus or car will also help us.

To conclude, I hold the view that even though increasing the price of junk food would stop people from consuming it, I do not think that it would resolve issue. I believe that it is key to educate people and promote a healthier lifestyle from a young age.

Technology has had a massive influence over the lives of humans and mass media has played a big role in it, eventhough it has it’s benefits and drawbacks.
Talking about the advantages of mass media, firstly, we can see how it has changed everyday routines of everyone. With the help of the ever advancing technology, we can stay connected and up to date with our loved ones miles apart and in turn, With the touch of a button, indiviuals poles apart can communicate and share their everyday life moments, whether it be happy or sad. Having said that, the mass media provides people to remain informed about all kinds of news as soon as it happens. With the booming of internet and social media platforms, one can get the latest bit of informaton regarding any topic, be it current affairs or historical. Therefore, the vast amount of knowledge the mass media has provided is commendable. Keeping in mind the internet, it has also managed to pave ways for individual and independent artists to gain fame and earn a living by uploading and sharing their genius works of music, art, film making and etc to the whiole world. This is something that previously would have taken ages to become available to the masses, let alone be released. Thus , the advancement in technology and the world wide web has created a very large library that holds valuable information to be provided as knowledge and other means of entertainmet as well.

The positives definitely out way the negtives. Meanwhile, there are a considerable number of drawbacks to this aswell. It is very easy to spend almost all of your daynin friont of a TV set or a computer. Any indiviual can get glued to a captivating series or a new computer game, so much so as to loose track of your surrondings and time. In addition to this, the lack of need to exercise also adds to this, as these couch potatoes get addicted to a virtual reality. Then, there are concerns over the illegitimate use of the web and the easy accessibility of illegal content and due to which many websites not only show case adult content tthat is deemed inappropriate for minors but others that can easily scam even the elderly.

All in all, i believe that the merits of mass media and technology outweigh the demerits, as the need for communication and advancement is only facillitated by this. The drawbacks, however, are there, which can be overlooked if this is used properly.
