The pie charts show the sale of different kinds of books made by a bookseller between 1972 and 2012 in percent. Overall, it can be seen that the sales of adult fiction and children’s fiction increased over the period of 40 years while the sales of biographies and other books declined.
In 1972, one-fifth of the total books sold were adult fiction. By 1992, its market share increased to 25% and in 2012, as much as 45% of the books sold belonged to this category.
While children’s books accounted for 20% of the total sales in 1972, its share increased to 22% by 1992. By 2012, one-fourth of the total sales were of children’s books. The sales of other books declined from 25% in 1972 to 20% in 1992 and to 10% in 2012. Similar trend was seen in the case of biography. Its sales decreased from 20% in 1972 to 8% in 2012. The sales of travel books also declined from 15% in 1972 to 10% in 2012.
