Band 8 IELTS essay sample

It is often debated whether employees should be part of the decision making at the workplace. Some people argue that only managers should make all the decisions while others insist that employees too should have a say in the management of their company. In my opinion, it depends on the nature and impact of the decision to be made.

On the one hand, by having a broader perspective of a workplace’s needs and current situation, managers who are exclusively trained to lead can potentially make swift and appropriate decisions. Companies almost always choose the most experienced and capable personnel to become a department or general manager. Also, should any unprecedented circumstances happen at work, a manager should be able to make quick decisions without having to consult others. If they need to seek the opinion of each and every employee before making a decision, the company cannot succeed. Matters concerning the management of the company should be taken by managers. For example, managers should be in charge of deciding what new products to launch or which new markets to enter.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that the key to the success of a company is its employees’ motivation and efficiency. If employed personnel are asked to participate and possibly vote in companies’ future plans, a sense of belonging and responsibility will eventually disseminate in the work environment; therefore, employees will work more responsibly and with motivation. For instance, research conducted by the University of Tokyo reveals that ever since the consumer tech company LG conducted a survey among its employees regarding their paid vacation and sick leave policy, there was a 20% decrease in the number of people calling in sick. This is due to the fact that LG’s employees try to take more responsibility for the decision that they made.

To recapitulate, managers are able to act in a short period of time. If a company elects to let its employees participate in different matters, those employees are more likely to act responsibly and stay committed to policies. Thus, I believe when there is a matter of emergency, managers should be in charge. However, when it is possible, employees must be part of the process of decision making.
